Where to Adopt?
Getting a new pet is a big decision. However the bigger decision once you decide on getting a pet is where to adopt the right one for you and your family. There are many types of adoption facilities where you can adopt dogs, cats, and other small animals. The most common types are:
"The Pound"
The animal control agency, while vilified in many children’s movies, is actually a wonderful place to get an animal. Usually a non-profit organization, this animal control agency has a large number of animals that come through their doors, and unfortunately makes it impossible to keep all of the animals. By taking a pet from the pound, you can not only get a new pet for yourself, but also save a life.
“The Shelter”
Animal shelters are sometime “no kill shelters,” but with the growing demand for space, many are forced to put down animals that do not get adopted. Shelters rely on donations from people who adopt their animals. These types of organizations often offer free or low-priced veterinary services, including the required spay/neuter or the animals that leave their walls.
“The Sanctuary”
Sanctuaries are places which take in animals that can or cannot be adopted. Many animals become to feral for adoption so this is a place where they can go to live out their lives. There are also “sanctuaries” called Puppy Mills. Puppy mills are greatly looked down upon, because they are simply places where they make as many dogs as possible to make a profit off the public. They often mistreat their animals, give minimal medical care, and use inbreeding to make large numbers of dogs.
It is important to research the place you decide to adopt your new pet from so you can help support good shelters and make sure your money is going to a good cause. Research the shelters and adoption centers near you to find the perfect new addition to your family.
