Travelling with Your Cat

They will scratch, claw, and yelp to avoid having to hop in their carrier and get in the car. Cats, unlike their canine counterparts, are very content to stay in their own familiar surroundings and typically find car rides a disturbance of this scene. It is important to keep this in mind when traveling with your cat to make the journey pleasant for the both of you.

Get Them Going Young

Cats will tolerate a carrier much more readily if they have been acclimated from a young age. Take your young kitten on frequent short drives to the store, a friend’s home, or just around the block. This way trips not always associated with the unpleasantness of the vet.

Leaving the Country

Contact the animal authorities in the appropriate jurisdiction to find out about restrictions and regulations about bringing a domestic animal into the country. This may require special vaccinations before the trip and a quarantine period for your cat once they arrive. The paperwork could take some time so make sure to take care of this well in advance of your trip.

Road Trips

When traveling by car, place the carrier in a secure spot there it will not shift around or fall. To ease your cat’s nerves you can drape a towel over the carrier, but make sure not to obstruct ventilation. Harness the car before opening the doors at rest stops. Let them out to have a stretch and use their litter box. Never leave your cat unattended in the car.
