The Golden Retriever
One of the most popular and beloved breeds of dogs, virtually synonymous with loyalty and love, the Golden Retriever has earned its spot as one of the best family pets you can have. Noble and affectionate, the Golden Retriever is typified by its patience, gentle demeanor, and friendliness.
They are intelligent and learn commands quickly, ranked as the fourth most intelligent dog breed by Stanley Coren, who wrote the book “The Intelligence of Dogs.” Their quick wits and ability to be trained have made them one of the most employed dogs in the world, serving as guide dogs for the blind, drug detectors for police agencies, and search-and-rescue animals.
Behavior
The Golden Retriever is a patient and friendly breed, which makes it perfect as a family pet. They love meeting new people and are at ease both with both family members and strangers. Because of their friendliness and eagerness to please, they make less-than-desirable guard dogs, but their sweet temper and gentleness make them good for families with small children.
The breed is well-known for its ability to learn and process commands, with the most intelligent members of the breed able to remember and distinguish nearly 250 verbal cues. This is a holdover from when they were bred to be gun dogs. To this day, they are one of the most popular breeds of retrieving dogs in the world, with their soft mouths and love of water making them the perfect hunting companion.
Health
Like most breeds of similarly sized dogs, the Golden Retriever has a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years. Also similar to mid-to-large breeds, Golden Retrievers often suffer from hip dysplasia later in life, which can eventually lead to lameness. Cataracts, heart disease, and cancer are also common ailments.
