The English Mastiff
The English Mastiff is easily recognized as one of the largest breeds of dogs in the world. Easily weighing it at over 150 pounds on average, many English Mastiffs can grow to be more than 200 pounds. Their characteristic flat nose and lolling tongue gives their face a distinctive look that many may mistake for a Saint Bernard.
Behavior
Although the English Mastiff can be a calm, almost lazy dog, it is extremely loyal and sensitive to strangers. It consistently ranks among the world’s top five guard dogs, partially due to its extremely intimidating, large size, but also its fierce loyalty. If approached by a stranger, it will position itself between its master and the stranger, and begin displaying aggression if the stranger does not back down. Despite this, the English Mastiff is a very calm, good natured dog that is slow to anger, and as such is very good with children.
Health Problems
Because it is such a large breed, its diet and exercise must be carefully monitored in order to avoid health problems associated with obesity. As with all large dogs, it can suffer from hip and elbow problems, although these can be avoided with proper breeding. Because it is so heavy, it is recommended that the English Mastiff sleeps on a soft surface such as carpet or grass, so as to ensure the dog does not develop rashes, calluses, and irritation.
