The Chihuahua
One of the smallest breeds of dogs in the world, the Chihuahua is one of the most well recognized dogs in the world as well. From “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” to “Legally Blonde,” the Chihuahua is a highly iconic dog, whose behavior and appearance set it apart from the other breeds of dogs.
Behavior
Chihuahuas are very keen watchdogs, who are extremely suspicious of strangers and will almost invariably bark at unfamiliar noises, unfamiliar people, unfamiliar settings, and even familiar versions of all of these. Because they are so small, they are easily intimidated by children and other dogs, and may develop defensive habits such as barking and biting in response. They can exercise themselves even in the confines of a house or apartment, making them ideal for such urban settings.
Health Problems
Chihuahuas can develop a number of health problems in their long lives, and should develop a strong relationship with a veterinarian to ensure consistent health care. Because they are so small, they can easily be hurt or even killed from falling or being crushed. They are prone to eye problems such as cataracts, and can also develop swollen heads or platelet problems in their skulls.
They can also be at risk for low blood sugar and diabetes. It is important to monitor their diet to ensure that they do not develop obesity which can be extremely dangerous for their small frames. At the same time, they tend to be finicky eaters and it must be ensured that they receive adequate nutrition.
