The Boxer

The muscular and well-formed Boxer is one of the most popular and recognizable breeds of dogs in the United States. Noted for its broad chest and powerful jaws, the breed was originally created from the English Bulldog and the now-extinct Bullenbeisser (or “bull-biter,” in English), a dog similar in appearance to the modern Boxer and known for its strength and athleticism. As of 2008, the Boxer is the sixth most popular breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club.

Behavior

While loyalty is a trait attributed to many breeds of dogs, the Boxer practically defines the quality. Unquestionably loyal and loving towards its owner and family, the Boxer can also be wary of strangers and quick to defend its loved ones. While it is playful and friendly when in good spirits, it can be courageous and violent when aroused. Boxers are particularly uncomfortable when surrounded by strangers or unfamiliar dogs.

The breed is also known for its intelligence, which can often result in headstrong stubbornness. Although listed as only average when considering ability to remember commands, the breed is inquisitive and self-possessed. Additionally, its sweet temper towards its family makes it a good breed for children.

Health

Like many large-size dogs, Boxers are particularly prone to heart diseases, hip dysplasia, and bloat. Hip dysplasia is joint disorder that results in the femur incorrectly fitting into the hip joint, and can eventually lead to lameness. Another illness due to its size is bloat, in which the intestinal tract can become twisted, often due to overeating. Bloat should be addressed immediately in order to prevent death. Boxers have an average lifespan for dogs, usually living between ten and twelve years.
