My Dog Won't Stop Barking
It is completely natural for dogs to bark, just as it is for birds to sing, but sometimes a dog's bark can get out of hand. In fact, it can even be illegal in some places if your dog is barking excessively in a residential neighborhood. If you are dealing with a dog that just won't stop barking, you should find the following tips helpful.
Dogs Bark Because of Boredom
Dogs get bored, just like humans do, and this often triggers excessive barking. Especially dogs that are accustomed to a lot of attention will bark because they have learned that they can get certain desired responses. You must show your dog that excessive barking will not gain your attention.
It is also important to remain somewhat out of touch with your dog. This is not to say that you should not have a fun and loving relationship with your dog, but you don't have to be with him or her at all times. The dog can be alone and should be fine when it is alone.
You also don't have to pet and reward your pet for nothing. Dogs are trained by reinforcement so reinforce good behavior. The point of these actions is to show your dog that it is ok to be distant at times and that will reduce your dog's anxiety when you are gone.
Providing your dog with entertainment is also a great way to stop it from barking. If you are home with your pet and he is barking you can distract him with something confusing or throw him one of his toys. More importantly, you should leave your dog something to entertain him while you are gone. This is the time your dog is most likely to bark from boredom. If you leave your dog something to reduce boredom you can also reduce barking.
