More Cat Breeds
Unlike dog breeds, which go back millennia – as far bag, really, as man has domesticated dogs – cat breeds are a relatively new phenomenon. While it's true that some cat breeds do go back quite a ways, the idea of cats being divided into breeds has only come about in the last hundred years or so. And while the breeds often don't have the significant, noticeable differences that dog breeds have, they can have some unique looks.
Some of the more popular and well-known cat breeds include:
- The Burmese. The Burmese is a very handsome, agile breed of cat that is very sociable and friendly towards humans, as well as empathetic and relaxed. They are also known for their intelligence.
- The Manx. The Manx is one of the most recognizable cats, mostly because of its stubby little tail or lack of tail entirely. They are known to be very good hunters and are often kept in rural areas.
- Russian Blue. The Russian Blue is a breed of cat known for its high intelligence and very playful nature, although they tend to be a bit reticent around strangers. They tend to have short blue-gray hair, and are popular because of the close bond they develop with their owners.
- The Siamese. The Siamese cat – made famous in “Lady and the Tramp” - is one of the most recognizable and well-known cats in the world. They are known for being affectionate and intelligent, and for their sociability with both family and strangers.
