German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world because of their innate intelligence and loyalty. Handsome, dignified, and muscular, German Shepherds are popular and successful in several different fields, ranging from herding (for which they were originally bred) to police and military service to being beloved family pets.

Behavior

One of the most outstanding traits of the German Shepherd is its intelligence, a trait for which it was originally bred in the late 1800s. The breed's intelligence, combined with its strength and loyalty, make it the perfect guard dog. They also excel at search and rescue.

The breed's loyalty also means that German Shepherds bond well with their family, especially children, whom they take a special obligation to protect. This loyalty cuts both ways, though. Since German Shepherds can also be an aggressive breed, they are very prone to biting. As their name suggests, they were originally bred as herding dogs, and like other herders, they excel under working conditions. They like to have a task to complete, which means that they require attention and exercise to be happy.

Health

Because of the breed's relative youth (being only about 110 years old), German Shepherds suffer from ailments stemming from inbreeding. Hip dysplasia is common, which can result in mobility issues and even lameness. Because of their open ears, they are also commonly suffer from ear infections. Average life expectancy is around 7 to 10 years. As with most breeds their size, they can also suffer from bloat, in which the stomach is stretched due to excessive gas.
