Exotic Pet Species

The two most common pets in the United States are dogs and cats. Many pet owners choose to keep less common species, such as birds, rodents, reptiles, and insects—and of course let's not forget fish. But some people, unsatisfied with the usual options, decide to seek out exotic pet species. Often these are rarer species of birds or fish. Some people illegally keep endangered species as well.

Ecologists usually recommend against purchasing exotic pets. Removing these animals from their natural environments is stressful for them, and there have been cases of exotic pets getting loose and quickly overrunning local ecosystems. If they don't become invasive species themselves, some animals might carry diseases that are communicable to humans or local animals. Parasites and insects on their bodies could have a negative impact on the local ecosystem as well.

In addition, many such pets are from species that are threatening to become endangered. Some have been smuggled into the country by illegal or semi-legal means, but this is the case less and less often. The USDA issues permits for exotic pet breeders, and there is a thriving breeding industry. These breeders often started with animals that were brought in before bans were put in place on certain species. Non-human primates, for example, cannot be legally imported into the US, but are bred here.
