Common Pet Owner Mistakes: Part 2

When welcome a new animal into your family, the tendency is to try and show them all the wonderful things in the world. For an animal, one of these wonderful things is treats. Getting a reaction is always easiest when food or treats are involved.

However, giving out treats is one of the best ways for you to reward good behavior, and thus continue their behavioral training. If you are constantly giving your animal treats, they are not going to know when they are being rewarded and when you are just doing it for fun—this will confuse the animal with the training you should be giving them.

Additionally, you need to make an effort to take your pet to places with other animals. Going to the park and letting them play with other dogs is a great way for them to understand that other dogs are not usually a threat. Going to training sessions with other dogs also helps socialize the animal. Another thing to remember is that dogs and cats are naturally social, so if you are gone a lot you should consider getting another animal to keep them company.

Along with giving too many treats is the tendency to not get your pet outside enough to exercise. In an obese country, we need to be aware of the weight of our animals as well. Fat animals can become unhealthy very quickly. Taking your animals outside will force them to exercise and stay healthy.
