Catnip

Some cat lovers like to treat their pets to catnip from time to time. Many cats enjoy the effects of chewing on it, and it can have a calming effect on some otherwise hyperactive cats. Only about two-thirds of cats can experience its effects, however. Some cats might not enjoy it as much as others and some pet owners might not like the effects on their particular cats. Nonetheless, for cats that enjoy it, catnip can be a safe occasional treat.

The word “catnip” refers to a number of closely-related plant species in the Nepeta genus. Sometimes the word “catmint” is used for these plants because of a resemblance to mint plants. Interestingly, aside from a treat for your pet, these plants contain oils that act as powerful insect repellents when concentrated.

The exact effects of catnip depend on your cat, but they can include rolling around with the plant, meowing, salivating, and sometimes leaping around while playing with the plant. Many cats seem to enjoy it greatly, and it can have a soothing, euphoric effect on them. Scientists believe that catnip works by releasing chemicals that are similar to cat pheromones.

If you decide to give your cat some catnip, be sure to break and crush the plant a little before giving it to your cat. Your cat might only notice the plant once they can smell it. Crushing the leaves and stems of the plant causes the chemicals to be released, which your cat may then detect. When cats chew on or lick the plant, more of these chemicals are released.
