Adoption versus Buying

If you are considering a new pet, one of the first questions to ask is whether you will purchase one from a breeder, or adopt one from a shelter or rescue organization. There are advantages and disadvantages to each one, so it is important to think carefully before making this choice. Here are some points you may want to consider.

Buying: Pros and Cons

When people buy a dog or other animal from a breeder or store, it is usually because they are interested in a certain breed and want to make sure their pet is from a “pure” line. There are some good points about having this information; for example, knowing a dog’s lineage may help in predicting what kind of personality and abilities he or she will have. It is also good to know a pet’s genetic background so one can be aware of any inheritable disorders or other problems.

However, an animal bought from a breeder may have more problems than expected. Selective breeding and even inbreeding have led many breeds to become associated with certain medical problems. For example, dysplasia is a common issue for purebred German Shepherds, while genetically inherited deafness is a rampant problem for Dalmatians.

Adoption: Pros and Cons

It is true that adopting an animal can come with some risks. Not knowing a certain animal’s lineage or even his or her previous history creates a lot of unanswered questions. An adopted animal may come with behavioral issues due to previous trauma or inherited health problems.

On the other hand, because they tend to have less inbreeding in their pasts, so-called mutts are actually healthier than purebred dogs on average. Many of them also have delightful personalities, combining the best features of the breeds they are composed of. Of course, adopting an animal is just plain cheaper than purchasing, but none of these reasons are truly the best argument for adoption.

The truth is that, through adoption, you can give an animal that has been neglected or mistreated a new chance at life.
